Zaluski, John

John Zaluski donated copies of his poems that were published in periodicals to the library in 2021.

John Zaluski moved to Freeport in 1980.  After working for many years in the corporate world in Manhattan, he made a midlife career change, becoming a business librarian, and later a public librarian.  He worked as a reference librarian at Freeport Memorial Library for 15 years. He is currently an officer and trustee of the Freeport Historical Society.

 

Zarchy, Harry

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Harry Zarchy wrote dozens of how-to-craft books starting in 1941.  He was a fine arts (painting, photography, stagecraft) teacher in primarily in James Madison High School and Martin Van Buren High School, for 36 years.  He retired from teaching in 1972.  He was born in New York, the eldest of three of Russian-Jewish immigrants and graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School.  He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Pratt Institute and New York University.

Zielenziger, Michael

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Michael Zielenziger, a Freeport High School graduate in 1973, is a visiting scholar at the Institute of East Asian Studies, U.C. Berkeley and was the Tokyo based bureau chief for Knight Ridder until 2003 (7 years).  After 9/11, he spent a great deal of time in Asia.  He was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1991 and studied at its Graduate School of Business.  He is a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton.  He wrote for the Chicago Sun Times, the Kansas City Star and was the first Pacific Rim Correspondent for the San Jose Mercury News.

Zimmerman, Charles J.

Charles J. Zimmerman retired from the Wantagh School District where he taught art.  He was the historian for the Village of Freeport and the curator of the Freeport Historical Society Museum.  As the latter, he reorganized the displays and artifacts.  He also was a member of the Landmarks Commission.  He was a frequent contributor of articles on the history of Freeport to the Freeport Leader.  He owned two businesses in Freeport: the Sportsman’s Café on Woodcleft Avenue and a card gift shop, the Remembrance Shoppe, on Merrick Road.  He now lives in Albany, New York.
