Kahn, Daniel

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Daniel Kahn was the Long Island business editor of Newsday.  He started his career in high school (Jamaica High School) as a part time copyboy for the Sports Department of the Long Island Press.  He covered the sandlot baseball games.  He graduated in 1957 from City College as an English major.  He remained at the Long Island Press doing general reporting and joined Newsday in 1961.  

Kaltenborn, H.V.

H.V. Kaltenborn lived in Freeport in 1912, according to the Freeport Census.  He was primarily known as a radio journalist.  He was a managing editor and foreign correspondent for the Brooklyn Eagle from 1910-1930.  He attended the gala performance of the reunion of Weber and Fields that also featured Lillian Russell.  Weber, Fields and Russell were in burlesque and vaudeville and had streets in Freeport named after them.  In his book, he refers to his life living on Long Island.  He said he was a friend of Don Marquis who wrote a daily column for the New York Sun.  One summer they swam together on Long Island.  Marquis borrowed a pair of trunks from Kaltenborn but they were too big.  They slipped down around his knees and he was in serious trouble.

Kapor, Mitchell

Mitchell Kapor was born in Brooklyn and attended public schools in Freeport, graduating in 1967.  He earned his B. A. in 1971 from Yale with a major in cybernetics.  His M.A. from Beacon College, is in psychology.  He also attended the Sloan School of Management at MIT and was an adjunct professor at MIT’s Media Lab, from 1994 to 1996.  He worked as a disc jockey in Hartford and was an instructor of transcendental meditation.  He is the founder of Lotus Development Corporation and the designer of Lotus 1-2-3.  In 2003, he was the founding chair of the Mozilla Foundation.  He has written numerous articles on information infrastructure policy and intellectual property in Scientific American, The New York Times, Forbes, Tricycle : the Buddhist Review, Wired and many others.  Along with Lou Reed and others he wrote for Fusion magazine in 1971.  It attempted a fusion of “music, politics, art, literature and film.”  He lives in San Francisco

Katz, Reuben M.

Rabbi Reuben M. Katz was born in New York City and earned his B.A. from Brooklyn College.  He received his rabbinical training at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he was ordained.  He also received his degrees of Master of Hebrew Literature and Doctor of Divinity from the Seminary.  After serving in a number of temples, he came to Freeport in 1949 and served for 40 years as the leader of Congregation B’nai Israel.  He has been active in Freeport on the Human Relations Commission, and the Interfaith Clergy Housing Enterprise.  In 1992, he received the Martin Luther King award from the Village and the Humanitarian Award from the Salvation Army.  He is the Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation B’nai Israel.

Keating, Frank

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Brooklyn born, Frank Keating started fishing in Forest Park when he was six or seven and, as he got older, fished in Jamaica Bay and then in Freeport’s waters.  He earned his living as a newspaperman for the Long Island Press as a police, court and political reporter.  From c.1950 he was the fishing editor of the Long Island Press and then moved on to Newsday.  He moved to Freeport in 1962.

Kelly, Joseph "Joe"

Joseph "Joe" Kelly is an American comic book writer who has written such titles as Uncanny X-Men, Action Comics, and JLA.  He studied at New York University, where he was recruited into Marvel Comics' Stan-hattan Project, a program that trained potential comic book writers at the university.  While at the University, he lived in Freeport.  Kelly's first published works for Marvel were 2099: World of Tomorrow and Marvel FanfareSome of his titles at Marvel included Deadpool, DaredevilX-Men, Uncanny X-Men.  Kelly then began to work for Marvel's competitor DC Comics, specifically their Action Comics title starring Superman.  He also authored What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & The American Way? Superboy, Justice League Elite, and Green LanternHis hardcover graphic novel is Legacy - The Last Will & Testament of Hal Jordan.   Kelly has three creator-owned works: Steampunk, Ballast, and the Space Ghost series.

Klowas, Robert

Robert Klowas is a Freeport, NY High School Graduate.  Class of 1962 and graduate of Trident Technical College, Charleston, SC. with an Associate Degree, major in business, retailing.  At 18 joined the U.S. Coast Guard from September 1962 to February 1991; he served continuously as enlisted and Commissioned Officer.

As an enlisted in the Radarman specialty, one tour of duty was Chief in Charge, Radarman School, Governors Island, NY. There were 10 instructors and 4 classes of 15 to 25 students running concurrently.

Commissioned as Chief Warrant Officer in 1973, was sent to the buoy tender Citrus in Kodiak Alaska from being stationed on the Cutter Campbell in Portland Maine.  Another tour of duty was Commanding Officer, USCG Station Shinnecock, Hampton Bays, NY 1979 to 1982.  He has traveled to every State that has salt water on its shores and to a dozen Countries, including the USSR in 1970.  Transferred 13 times. 

Work on this book generated from his assignment at USCG Headquarters, Washington, DC Married in 1966 to Geraldine (Jeri); they have 2 Daughters; 1 Granddaughter, and 5 Grandsons. The author and his wife reside in Charleston, SC.

Knorr, Al Scofield

Al Scofield Knorr was a freelance poet for 30 years and an accomplished musician.  He served in Korea and did undergraduate work at Barrington College, Nassau Community College and Hofstra University.  He was employed in business administration and advertising.  He has an honorary Doctorate of Literature.  He was the coordinator of the Poetry Consortium of Rockville Centre.

Konezny, Lorette

A publishing executive, Lorette Konezny was born in New York City and received her B.S. from the University of Bridgeport in 1971 and did postgraduate work at Adelphi University.  She runs Pen Notes, a publishing, manufacturing, and distributing company in Freeport.  She became interested in fine motor skills when her son encountered difficulties learning to write. She took him to an occupational therapist, who determined that the boy had a problem with depth perception. After a summer of therapy, the boy’s handwriting difficulties disappeared. “I think that what is happening is that children are being required to write at much earlier ages than they were in the past,” she says. “Many times, children become frustrated because they aren’t really ready to write or they’re not shown the proper patterns. I feel that it’s important that we prepare them.”
