MacDougall, Robert D.

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Robert D. MacDougall attended Atkinson and graduated from Freeport High School in 1958.  His degrees, a B.A. in architecture (1963) and a Ph.D. in anthropology (1971) were from Cornell University.  Before returning to Cornell as a professor of architecture, he worked as an architect for firms in New York City and Ithaca.  He was also an advisor to the Peace Corps.

Mallimo, Sal

Sal Mallimo is the author of the books Piccolo Santino or My Calabrian Childhood in the 50's. Then to New York, Italian Style and A Walk in Time: Poetry From Real Life About Love and Death donated in March 2022.

After graduating from Freeport High School in 1967, Sal graduated from the Film School, School of Visual Arts, NYC 1970. As an artist, Sal was heavily influenced by two surrealist painters, Salvador Dali and Giorgio De Chirico. His films reflect those styles. Received the Gold medal award in 1970 at the Atlanta Film Festival for Mio Mondo, his second film of a trilogy. In 1972, Sal was invited to screen Mio Mondo at the Zagreb International Film Festival. The first animated film, produced in 1968, titled A Time to Live, A Time to Dream, A time to Die. Received Second place finish in the 1969 First Esquire Magazine College Film Festival. Sal enjoyed a 35-year film career in film animation in NYC and operated his own animation studio Mimondo Productions, Ltd., from 1982-to 2005. Taught traditional animation methods with Claymation from 1992-2008 at The Joe Kubert School, Dover, NJ. Piccolo Santino, or My Calabrian Childhood, in the ’50s. Then to New York Italian Style his memoirs and War With Myself. A twelve-minute animation film. An Allegorical account of a person’s need to change for the better. Are two-lifetime projects started in 1970 and finally completed in 2020. In conclusion, Piccolo Santino and the three films explain each other. His first book, A Walk in Time, Poetry from Real Life about Love and Death uses original art, etchings, and photographs to depict actual heart-rending events. In 2019 Sal digitally remastered War With Myself, his son Salvatore Michael completed the musical score. The film has garnered various awards at festivals around the world. Recently Sal produced a five-minute autobiography as a trailer for a possible mini-series based on the book Piccolo Santino.

In 2022, A Walk In Time was a finalist in the 2022 Pacific Book Awards.

Margolies, Eva

Eva Margolis, a psychotherapist, is one of the nation's most prominent sex therapists and is certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists.  She was born and raised in New York.  She has earned her B.A., M.A (from Queens College) and CST and has done extensive corporate and personal coaching as well as witness preparation.  She has appeared as an expert on interpersonal communication on the Today Show, Oprah, 20/20, CNBC, the Sally Jessie Raphael Show and has been featured in People Magazine.  She has presented at national and international conferences.

Maria, Channie

Channie Maria is the author of Seeds in My Garden.  She donated her book to the library in March 2019.

Marinaccio, Carmine

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Carmine Marinaccio was a charter boat captain on the Duchess II sailing out of the Freeport Boatman’s Association boatyard on Guy Lombardo Avenue.  He was a founder and secretary of the organization.  He grew up in Long Beach and, as a teenager, fixed boats that washed ashore and took people out on them to fish.  At 17 he received his captain’s license.  He did not serve in the military during World War II, but he was foreman of a "crew rebuilding the railroad bridge across Jamaica Bay so it could support munitions trains.” ... He also was on Coast Guard watch for any enemy activity."  As he observed fish disappearing from south shore waters, he was involved in a group dedicated to saving the environment.

Marshall, Susan E.

 Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Susan E. Marshall attended Freeport Schools (Columbus Avenue, Dodd and the High School) and graduated in 1968.  Her father, John, ran a plumbing and heating business in town.  She received her B.A. in sociology from the University of Denver in 1972, her M.A. in sociology in 1977 from the University of Massachusetts and her Ph.D. from the same in 1980.  She was honored as a distinguished University Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin.  In addition to her book, she has written numerous articles, chapters in books, papers, book reviews and lectured on topics within her field.  In an email she remembers Freeport  for its “cultural diversity [that]has always made Freeport unique.”

 

Marx, Harpo

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

In his book, Harpo Marx writes about his job as a piano player in 1907 at Schang’s Hotel on East Merrick Road when he was 19 years old.  His employer, Mrs. Schang and her gang, were later arrested as a major burglary ring on the south shore.  Born Adolph Marx in New York, he was the second oldest member of the comedy team which was first called the Four Nightingales and, later, the Marx Brothers.

Mason-Draffen, Carrie

For over ten years, Carrie Mason-Draffen has written a column in the Money and Careers section of Newsday on workplace questions.  

Mathews, Karen

Karen Mathews is the pen name of Dr. Monica Bennett.  On July 7, 2023, she donated a copy of her book, How May I Serve to the Library.

Dr. Monica's life has taken her on a journey of self-discovery for life, love, and truth. She was born to parents who were both holocaust survivors. Her childhood years were filled with uncertainty and fear, which led to many unhappy and disappointing results. She knew in her heart and soul that there must be a better way. So, after years of study and applying the principles of the laws of the universe the answers were revealed to her.

Dr. Monica owned and operated a successful horticultural business for 22 years before following her calling to be an empowerment coach. She became aware of how the laws of the natural world operate in our Iives and saw the correlation between how things grow and how we govern our own mind. She applies the same laws of nature from her years of working with plants to the principles In her coaching techniques.

Since then, she has earned her Doctorate degree in Naturopathy, as well as become a Certified communication Intelligent coach. Certified Life Success Consultant, Certified Reflexologist, Certified Nia dancer. Certified Biodynamic Gardener, Certified Napoleon Hill Science of Success trainer, Brian Tracy's Coaching methods, as well as many other modalities including NLP.

She is also an author of the book How May I Serve and E-book; Navigating Uncertainty With Faith and Courage and 10 Keys On How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur.

She has traveled extensively around the world, including Pucallpa Peru to work with a Shaman, to uncover hidden mysteries of the mind and India to practice meditation.

 

Maushart, Susan

Susan Maushart was born in Freeport and moved to Australia in 1986.  Her Ph.D. in communication arts and sciences is from NYU.  She teaches at Curtin University in Australia and is a nationally syndicated columnist.  Her impressive and varied experience includes a directorship with the Moore River Project in Western Australia, which resulted in the publication of Sort of a Place Like Home. The book, based on oral and archival history, presents an intimate and vivid picture of aboriginal experience in the early 1900s in the Moore River settlement (later depicted in the film Beyond the Rabbit Proof Fence). The book won a Festival Award for Literature at the Adelaide Festival in 1994.

McGrowder, Elaine Joy

A native of the Caribbean, Elaine Joy McGrowder spent most of her life in Europe.  She attended the Jamaica Tutorial College and received her professional training as an R.N. in public health at the University College Hospital in London, West London College, Richmond U.K.  Since 2000, she has volunteered at South Nassau Community College, Nassau University Hospital and the Komanoff Rehabilitation and Geriatric Nursing facility in Long Beach.

McNally, Shannon

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Born in Hempstead and a 1991 graduate of Freeport High School, Shannon McNally went to Franklin and Marshall College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in social anthropology.  While in college, she sang and played in clubs and also was a “busker” (street performer) in Paris Her albums include North American Ghost Music, Geronimo, and Jukebox Sparrows.  As a singer, she blends elements of blues, folk, rock and country. McNally has toured with Willie Nelson, Stevie Nicks, John Mellencamp, Ryan Adams, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and Rufus Wainwright.  She has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Lenny Bruce, Lou Reed, and Run DMC.

Mejia, Ramona L.

Ramona L. Mejia is the author of Destiny.  A resident of Freeport since 2001, Ramona donated her book to the library in November 2016.

Mercurio, Anthony

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

A 1957 graduate of Freeport High School, Anthony Mercurio earned his Ph.D. from New York Medical College in 1973.  He was an associate professor at the NYU College of Dentistry and now a member of the lab faculty in the Department of Anatomy and Structural Biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Merlis, Brian

Brian Merlis has chronicled much of Brooklyn’s history and collects ephemera about the borough.  He was born in Brooklyn and lived with his parents in the Flatlands.  His educational background includes a B.A. and M.A. in music education from Brooklyn College.  He is a special education teacher in the New York City school system.  In Freeport, he is a member of the Landmarks Commission and the Freeport Historical Society.

Metz, Charles

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Charles Metz, the son of Clinton Metz, graduated from Freeport High School in 1960 and continued his education at Bowdoin College where he earned a B.A. in physics in 1964.  He received both his M.S. (1966) and Ph.D. (1969) from the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in radiological physics.  He is a professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Chicago.  He is the author or co-author of more than 250 scientific publications and ROC software.  He is a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

Metz, Clinton E.

Clinton E. Metz, an author-editor was born in Newark, New Jersey, was a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism in 1925 with a Bachelor of Literature degree , and the city editor of the Brooklyn Eagle.  He also wrote for the Freeport Leader and the Nassau Daily Review-Star.  At the beginning of his career, he was an editor for the Suffolk County Review and the Bay Shore Journal.  He moved to Freeport in 1946.  A charter member of the Freeport Historical Society and its archivist, he was appointed the Village Historian in 1963.  From 1961 until his retirement in 1975, he was an employee of the Village Electric Department.  He also contributed articles to the Long Island Forum magazine.

Miller, Moses

Moses Miller is an author, journalist and cofounder of Mind Candy, LLC, a book publishing company.  His B.S. in business management and his MS in technology management were earned at Polytechnic University.  He has written many articles for websites, The Voice, Newsday and 88HIPHOP.com where he is the editor in chief.

Mombeshora, Naome

Naome Mombeshora is the author of the children's book, Pinto, The Sneaky Little Mouse.  She donated her book to the library in 2019.

Morris, Hazel

Hazel Morris was in the 1988 American Poetry Association’s anthology, Best New Poets of 1988.  Her poems include “Our Space Crew” and “The Wind In Her Hair.”  She had been writing for 25 years.

Mulroy, Michael

Michael Mulroy was born in Uniondale and worked summers in Freeport.  He moved to New Port Richey, Florida when he was 14 but came back for the summers.  He was a coach for the Freeport Little League.  He has received several poetry awards.  He also created a song of awareness of the POW/MIA issue, “Bring Them Home.”

Musicant, David

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

A 1988 valedictorian and graduate of Freeport High School, David Musicant earned a BS in mathematics and physics, in 1992, from Michigan State University.  He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was awarded a MA in mathematics and an MS in computer scienxe in 1994.  His Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin was received in 2000.  Presently he is an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Wisconsin.

Murphy, Nikki

Nikki Murphy (Monique Murphy) is the author of Home for Hurricanes: A Memoir of Resilience in Poetry and Prose.  She donated a copy of her book to the library in March 2021. 

Mutel, Robert

Biography by Cynthia J Krieg, Village Historian

Robert Mutel graduated from Freeport High School in 1964 and went to Cornell University where he earned his B.A. in physics in 1968.  At the University of Colorado, he finished his Ph.D. in astrophysics in 1975.  As a physicist, he was part of the United States Antarctic Research Program from 1968 to 1979 and was honored in 1973 when Mutel Peak on Ross Peninsula was named for him.  He is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa and specializing in radio astronomy.  Mutel has written innumerable articles in Astronomical Journal, Astrophysical Journal, and other scholarly journals.
