Abbott, James E.

James E. Abbott (circa 1861-1922) was an accomplished musician and piano instructor.  Abbott lived with his wife Annie at 28 Archer Street.  He was born in Canada.  Abbott was a member of the Freeport Odd Fellows and the Spartan Lodge.  

Abbott was buried in Toronto, Canada.

Abeles, Edward S.

Edward S. Abeles (1869-1919) was a stage and movie actor.  He was best known for playing Monty Brewster in the stage and later movie production of Brewster's Millions.

Abeles, born in St. Louis, MO, he studied to be a lawyer but ultimately became an actor.  His first stage performance took place in New York at the Palmer's Theatre in 1891 in the production of Alabama. Abeles theater career also included: My Friend from India (1896); The Sprightly Romance of Marsac (1900); Under Two Flags (1901); Lady Margaret (1902); The Diplomat (1902); The Lady of Lyons (1902); Mrs. Jack (1902); My Wife's Husbands (1903); The Whitewashing of Julia (1903); Glad of It (1903); Glittering Gloria (1904); The Dictator (1904); The West Point Cadet (1904); The Rich Mrs. Repton (1904); Cousin Billy (1905); Man and Superman (1905); Brewster's Millions (1906); The Goddess of Liberty (1909); The Last Laugh (1915); A Pair of Queens (1906); The Lassoo (1917); On with the Dance (1917); and Oh, Lady ! Lady! (1918).  His film career included: Brewster's Millions (1914); The Making of Bobby Burnit (1914); Ready Money (1914); The Millions (1914); After Five (1915); The Lone Wolf (1917); Opportunity (1918); and The House of Mirth (1918).

Abeles was a member of the Elks Club and was a charter member of the LIGHTS Club.  His wife Lottie was known by stage name Charlotte Lander. They lived at 107 Whaley Street.  He died at the age of 48 after a three week illness following an operation.

Akst, Emanuel

Emanuel Akst (1879*-1941) was vaudeville musician and performer.  Under the stage name Ed Manny, he was one half of the comedy duo Manny and Pinard.  Akst played the trumpet and had been featured in the B. A. Rolfe radio orchestra and performed at Rector's Restaurant in Manhattan. He frequently played the Palace, the Hippodrom, and other New York City theaters.  He served as a delegate for the Local 802, American Federation of Musicians. He was also a member of the White Rats, a fraternal organization and labor union that support the rights of male performers.

Akst was born in Eastern Europe (Poland or Russia) and came to the United States at the age of nine.  He lived in Freeport for 21 years.  Akst wife, Georgie, owned a home at 98 East Milton Street.   He died of a heart attack of at the Freeport train station.  Akst is buried in Mount Ararat Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.

*date taken from Akst's naturalization papers.  Other sources give his birth year as 1885.
