This section documents the names/iconography used to describe the sporting teams of Freeport High School. During some years, multiple names are used. In fact, there are newspaper articles in which "Scarlet Hurricane, "Red and White," and "Red Devils" are used interchangeably. Before Freeport High School became the Red Devils around 1933, this moniker was used by Freeport gridiron rival, Flushing High School.
Though research into the origin of the mascot is ongoing, there is no evidence that Red Devil has a connection to Native Americans or Indigenous People.
