Historic Long Island Record Labels & Studios: Cove City Sound Studios

Cove City Sound Studios

Cove City Sound Studios, based in Glen Cove on Long Island, is a storied recording facility founded in the early 1980s by Richie Cannata, the longtime saxophonist for Billy Joel. The studio combines vintage analog warmth — including a Neve 8068 console — with modern digital tools like Pro Tools HD, making it a versatile space for a wide spectrum of artists. Over the decades, its reputation has grown, attracting top names in pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, and more.

The roster of artists who have recorded at Cove City is impressively diverse. Pop icons such as Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, and Marc Anthony have used its facilities. A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011) by Dream Theater, which marked the debut of drummer Mike Mangini with the band, was reportedly fully tracked at Cove City. On the hip-hop side, LL Cool J tracked parts of his 14 Shots to the Dome album there, further showing the studio’s stylistic range.

Freeport native Lou Reed, Huntington's Mariah Carey, The Jonas Brothers, Brand New, Barry Manilow, Jessica Simpson, Lionel Richie, CoCo Lee, Taylor Dayne, Corey Hart, TNT (with producer Ric Wake at the helm), Kelly Osbourne, Rosie O'Donnell, Anastacia, Natalie Cole, Ritchie Blackmore, Hall & Oates, and Billy Joel (tying the studio’s legacy back to Cannata’s roots) are also documented as having done sessions at Cove City. 'N-SYNC appears to have had their best-selling album No Strings Attached mixed at Cove City, while Whitney Houston and Cheap Trick also had key recordings mixed there.
