Joseph Rigby, the younger brother of Moxey Rigby, may have been the first African American to play for the Freeport High School football team in 1913. Another Rigby is mentioned playing in 1911 but a first name is not given.
Many of the teams Freeport High School normally played, failed to produce a team for the 1913 season, including Hempstead and Rockville Centre. Freeport's losing season was blamed on having a young squad (ten of the players had graduated the year prior leaving only six veterans).
