ESL and ESOL Classes

Literacy Nassau:

Services offered:

Tutoring: Adult beginner English language learners and basic literacy learners are matched with tutors to achieve the educational, economic and social goals they and their tutors have identified as important to them.

Small Group Instruction: Beginner and intermediate level students receive small group instruction taught by certified, volunteer teachers.

ESL Classes: Advanced level English language learners attend ESL classes which are taught by certified teachers on staff.

Citizenship Services: We also provide assistance with naturalization and citizenship.

Next Chapter Book Clubs: We recently expanded our reach to train volunteers to facilitate book clubs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Nassau BOCES:

English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are for students whose native language is not English and want to improve speaking, readings and writings skills.

Note: If you are under the age of 18, you are not eligible for the Adult Learning Program. You can contact Nassau BOCES "English Literacy Alterative Programs (ELAP)" Program, at (516) 622-6841.  If you are 18-20 years of age, you first need to consult with your High School Guidance Office.

ESOL Program Overview:

The English as a Second Language Vocational Program is designed to empower non-native English speakers with the language proficiency and practical communication skills needed for success in the workplace. This program aims to enhance students’ English language abilities in professional contexts, enabling them to pursue vocational and career opportunities confidently.

Program Duration: The program duration may vary but typically ranges from 14 to 16 weeks

Curriculum Highlights:

  1. Foundational English Skills:
    • Development of basic English language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There are 5 ESL levels: Pre-beginning, Beginner, Intermediate, advanced, part 1, and part 2.
  2. Vocabulary Building:
    • Expansion of vocabulary relevant to vocational and professional contexts, such as workplace communication and industry-specific terminology.
  3. Grammar and Sentence Structure:
    • Master essential grammar rules and sentence structures to enhance written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Business Communication:
    • Training in professional communication, including writing emails, memos, reports, and participating in meetings.
  5. Listening and Speaking Proficiency:
    • Enhancing oral communication skills through group discussions, presentations, and workplace simulations.
  6. Reading Comprehension:
    • Developing skills in understanding and interpreting written materials, including workplace documents and instructions.
  7. Cultural Competency:
    • Understanding and navigating cultural differences in the workplace, promoting effective cross-cultural communication.

Assessment and Progress Tracking: Regular assessments to monitor language proficiency and progress throughout the program.

Support Services: Providing additional resources and support services, such as tutoring or language labs, to assist students in their language learning journey.

Prerequisites: The prerequisites vary, but they are generally open to individuals with basic proficiency in the English language. The assessment test (TABE) is required for ESL-level Placement.

Certification: Program completion certificate indicating the achieved level of English proficiency.

Upon completing the ESL Vocational Program, graduates should have the language skills and confidence to pursue vocational and career opportunities in English-speaking environments, contributing to personal and professional growth.

When needed for individual career development, we tap into Círculo’s educational resources including ESL, GED/TASC, and literacy and computer training resources.
