CUNY Adult Literacy/HSE/ESL Program: (In NYC)

CUNY provides free classes in the following subjects: English as a Second Language (ESOL), Basic Education (BE), and High School Equivalency GED Preparation (HSE/GED). Classes are offered at CUNY’s campuses mornings, evenings, and weekends. Download a flyer with locations and contact information.

Registration is ongoing throughout the year. If you are interested in registering, or would like more information, follow these steps:

  • Find the borough where you want to attend classes.
  • Find the campus nearest to you.
  • Call the program before you go to make sure they offer the kinds of classes you are interested in.

Literacy Partners (In NYC): Offers FREE classes for adults, ages 16 and over. Our classes include Pre-HSE, HSE, and ESOL. Literacy Partners works with our community partners to recruit students for our adult literacy courses. Presently, we have open enrollment for our classes.

We address the urgent needs of our community, including housing, income, health, education, and more. For over forty years, NMIC has helped our clients on the path to secure, successful, and independent futures. Harlem Center for Education (In NYC): Offers an intensive 13-week preparation program.

Agency Description:
The Harlem Center for Education Adult Literacy Education program serves 60 adult learners per year in Adult Basic Education and Pre-TASC courses throughout the year. Classes are offered Monday - Thursday from 10:00am - 1:00pm and 2:30pm - 5:30pm. Registration and placement testing is held every Friday at 10:30am at our office.

Union Settlement Association
Union Settlement, located in East Harlem, offers comprehensive HSE classes for all ages and levels. Students are assessed individually, with classes designed around their abilities.

Additional High School Equivalency (HSE) Resources

YouthBuild USA
Low-income youths between the ages of 16 and 24 are given the opportunity to work toward their TASC or high school diplomas by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development and community service. A national organization, it has locations in the five borroughs.

Queens Library
Queens Library’s Adult Learner Program administers the computer-based version of TASC at five locations, and offers the National External Diploma Program (NEDP), geared towards those who prefer an alternate route to the HSE diploma.

Brooklyn Public Library
The Brooklyn Public Library holds part-time pre-HSE classes in various branches for adults who speak English and want to improve their reading and math skills in preparation for their HSE exam. They also  provide testing for the TASC exam or you may enroll in NEDP (National External Diploma Program.)
