The Age of Innocence, directed by Martin Scorsese and based on Edith Wharton’s classic novel, starred Daniel Day-Lewis (Newland Archer), Michelle Pfeiffer (Ellen Olenska), and Winona Ryder (May Welland). While much of the film’s Grand Dame Gilded‑Age opulence was recreated around Troy, New York, a key sequence unfolds on Long Island. The formal garden scene was actually filmed at the elegant Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island, where its manicured lawns and stately backdrop perfectly evoke the lavish social world of Wharton’s New York.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress In A Supporting Role (Winona Ryder), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Art Direction.
