Farmingville, New York -- a hamlet in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, home to the Brookhaven Amphitheater has a surprisingly rich connection to professional wrestling. Local venues like the Farmingville Fire Department and nearby halls have hosted events organized by independent promotions, most notably the New York Wrestling Connection (NYWC), beyond several industry notables having called Farmingville home.
Farmingville was the hometown of former WWF, WCW and TNA creative head Vince Russo. He famously hosted a local wrestling radio show on AM station WGBB in the early 1990s titled Vicious Vincent’s World of Wrestling, before rising to prominence in the WWF, where he helped define the Attitude Era. The former WCW World Heavyweight Champion currently maintains a devoted fanbase as a podcaster, and decades later maintains a feud with the legendary Jim Cornette.
A 1992 Universal Wrestling Superstars (UWS) event in Farmingville included Don Muraco, "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, and S.D. Jones. A 1995 Universal Superstars Of America (USA) event also had Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, in addition to Typhoon (Tugboat) and Sonny Beach. NYWC events -- like the one pictured below -- included Matt Cardona, Willow Nightingale, Jaden Valo, Mike Mondo (Spirit Squad's Mikey), Mikey Whipwreck, Bull James, and Little Guido.
Perhaps the most notable wrestling figure from Farmingville -- Russo aside -- is Mason Raige, who began his career training on Long Island. He later appeared in WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling and was seen on WWE television in 2007, also acting as one of The Undertaker’s druids at WrestleMania 23 and serving as Vince McMahon’s security on Monday Night Raw.
