Long Island's Professional Wrestling History & Landmarks: Centereach

A look at the history of professional wrestling on Long Island, town by town

Centereach

Centereach, New York holds a unique place in the intersection of pop culture and professional wrestling, blending comic book legacy with live sports entertainment. The town is believed to have been home to legendary comic book artist Don Heck, who played a pivotal role in shaping the Marvel Universe. Heck co-created iconic characters such as Iron Man, The Wasp, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Wonder Man, and contributed significantly to The Avengers series. His influence stretched beyond comics into the wrestling world when none other than Hulk Hogan appeared in cameo form in an Iron Man comic during the 1980s -- a fun nod to the synergy between superhero bravado and wrestling charisma.

That connection between Marvel’s heroes and pro wrestling didn’t end with Hogan’s comic book cameo. Many WWE Superstars have drawn inspiration from Marvel’s larger-than-life characters, incorporating superhero motifs into their ring gear and personas. From Seth Rollins’ Thanos-inspired attire to Ricochet’s Nightwing-like aesthetic, the influence of creators like Don Heck is deeply woven into wrestling’s visual storytelling. Centereach, through Heck’s legacy, has indirectly helped shape the superheroic presentation that defines much of modern wrestling.

In addition to its pop culture ties, Centereach has hosted its fair share of live wrestling action. The town has been a frequent stop for Victory Pro Wrestling (VPW), an independent promotion that has staged numerous events locally. These shows have given fans up-close access to rising stars and beloved veterans.

Centereach was also the site of a 1998 Long Island Wrestling Federation event -- Bill Apter discussed the importance of LIWF and Doghouse training school founder Bobby Lombardi in a 2020 Paltrocast interview -- and a 1999 NWA New York show.
