Long Island's Professional Wrestling History & Landmarks: Atlantic Beach

A look at the history of professional wrestling on Long Island, town by town

Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach, New York, a small oceanfront village on Long Island's South Shore -- part of a barrier island alongside Long Beach and Point Lookout -- has a subtle yet notable connection to the world of professional wrestling. Though not traditionally recognized as a wrestling hotbed, the town did host a documented live wrestling event in 2001, cementing its place -- however briefly -- on the map of wrestling history. The event, promoted by the Long Island Wrestling Federation, took place on August 18, 2001, and featured a mix of independent talent and recognizable names. The card included appearances by Prince Nana, Crowbar, Low Ki, Kid Kash, King Kong Bundy, Little Guido, Mikey Whipwreck, and Balls Mahoney.

Beyond the ring, Atlantic Beach holds a unique pop culture significance that indirectly intersects with professional wrestling. The town served as the fictional home of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather, one of the most iconic American films of all time. Adding a layer of wrestling lore to that cinematic connection, the role of Luca Brasi was played by Lenny Montana, a former professional wrestler turned actor. Montana’s imposing presence in both wrestling rings and Hollywood screenplays reflects the kind of crossover appeal that has long connected the wrestling world to broader entertainment landscapes.

Royal Pains ... Catalina on USA Network

Atlantic Beach also played a role in the WWE’s broader television footprint through its inclusion in Royal Pains, a USA Network series that aired from 2009 to 2016. Several scenes from the show were filmed in and around the town, showcasing its scenic coastal charm. The connection to WWE stems from the fact that Royal Pains was frequently advertised during Monday Night Raw.
