Long Island's Professional Wrestling History & Landmarks: Massapequa

A look at the history of professional wrestling on Long Island, town by town

Massapequa

Massapequa, New York holds a meaningful place in the cultural fabric of professional wrestling, thanks to its ties with several influential figures and key wrestling-related events. Located in Nassau County on Long Island, Massapequa has quietly contributed to wrestling's mainstream reach through the lives and careers of athletes, media figures, and pop culture icons who’ve either lived in or passed through the town. Its mix of blue-collar grit and suburban charm made it an ideal environment for both the development of talent and the nurturing of wrestling fandom over the decades.

An April 1991 live event was documented as being presented by the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) at Plainedge High School; UWF founder Herb Abrams is believed to have been buried in West Babylon at Montefiore Cemetery. This event is documented as featuring Cactus Jack (Mick Foley, who has been documented as living in Garden City, Saint James and East Setauket), Paul Orndorff, Bob Orton, Boris Zhukov, Iron Mike Sharpe, and Lanny Poffo. More information on this event can be found here.

One of the most prominent wrestling figures associated with Massapequa is Peter Senerchia, better known to fans as Tazz. A former ECW Champion and WWE announcer, Tazz is widely believed to have lived in Massapequa and raised his son there. His son, Hook, now a rising star in AEW, continues that wrestling lineage—bringing a new generation of tough, no-nonsense in-ring style to national television. The father-son connection gives Massapequa a unique place in wrestling history, symbolizing both the legacy of the ECW era and the future of modern wrestling through AEW.

Another influential resident tied to Massapequa is Bill Apter, the legendary wrestling journalist and editor who became a household name to fans through his work with Pro Wrestling Illustrated and other "Apter mags." Apter -- who has been credited for introducing Andy Kaufman into Memphis Wrestling -- played a vital role in shaping the narrative around professional wrestling in the pre-internet era, providing fans with kayfabe-driven coverage that helped build mystique and deepen emotional investment in wrestlers' stories. One of the key creations of the "Apter mags" was the PWI 500, a detailed ranking of the top 500 wrestlers in the world. Pro Wrestling Illustrated has published the list every year since its inception.

Massapequa also briefly housed Dee Snider, the iconic frontman of Twisted Sister, before he relocated to nearby Baldwin. While not a wrestler, Snider has often been tied to the attitude and presentation style of pro-wrestling, having appeared at various WWE-related functions over the years. Snider has also credited WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley for inspiring him to do so much charity work.

The Sunrise Mall in Massapequa further cements the town’s wrestling legacy through fan engagement and promotion. The mall’s New York Sports Works store played host to autograph signings with some of WWE’s biggest stars during the mid-2000s, including John Cena, Michelle McCool, Candice Michelle, and Batista. These appearances drew hundreds of fans, offering locals an up-close experience with top-tier wrestling talent and helping WWE strengthen its fanbase on Long Island during a critical growth period. Such events also reflect how Massapequa served as a prime market for WWE’s outreach beyond major cities.

Massapequa native Jerry Seinfeld, in May 2024, was quoted in an interview stating that Seinfeld may not have gone forward as a television series had it not been for WWE's Saturday Night Main Event airing on NBC.

In May 2025, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon -- a long-time executive for WWE -- made an appearance at Massapequa High School with relation to the controversy surrounding the school's mascot.
