Friends of the Freeport Library

The Friends of the Freeport Library are an indispensable group of volunteers.  Over the years, they have donated a grand piano, helped renovate the Memorial Room, and raised funds for the purchase of a video projector, a laptop, and the TV kiosk in the lobby.  Become a booster of the Library and help continue this decades-old tradition of community support!  To do so, fill out a membership form and return to the library along with a check made payable to Friends of the Freeport Memorial Library.

Become a Volunteer Firefighter

Have you ever thought about becoming a volunteer firefighter?  Freeport is home to the largest and busiest volunteer fire department in New York state.  There are 8 fire companies, one Fire Police squad and a Dive team.  Freeport is also home to one of eight Tactical Rescue Teams on Long Island.  You may be wondering what steps you will have to take in order to join the fire department.  Consider the following:

  • There are three kinds of fire companies in Freeport: Engine/Hose company Truck company, and Emergency company.  Each of these companies have a different focus, but they all work together to fight fires.
  • Make time to visit the fire house where you would like to volunteer.  The best time to do this would be Friday evenings or Sunday mornings.  Meet the members and volunteer for tasks around the fire house.
  • Over time, you will be allowed to fill out an application which will be reviewed by the company and submitted to the police department for a thorough background check.
  • After you've filled out the application, the company will vote to nominate you as a firefighter and you will begin a probationary process (roughly 6 months, depending on your availability).
  • Keep in mind that this process will require time.  Prospective Fire Fighters will need to invest at least 40 hours of their time which includes training at the Nassau County Fire Academy in Bethpage.   EMTs will need to spend 180 hours which includes training at various EMS training facilities.
